BY The Demeter Association, Inc. The aim of Biodynamic Agriculture, which started in 1924, is to restore and maintain the vitality and living fertility of our soils in order to produce foods of the highest nutritional value. No synthetic fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides or hormones are used on Demeter Certified farms. In addition, foods bearing the Demeter symbol are not treated with synthetic chemicals or irradiated during processing, storage or handling. What Biodynamics promotes is even more important than what it avoids. Soil, plants and animals are seen in a "larger" context, not simply as tools of agribusiness. The ideal Biodynamic farm is a self-sufficient system that enhances the ecological and nutritional environment of the plant resulting in foods which have better taste, longer shelf life and increased nutritional value.
